My Family and Friends: A Fun Lesson!
Hi kids! Let’s learn about our awesome families and friends in India. They make life super fun!
1. What Kinds of Families Are There?
Families in India are like big teams full of love! Here are two types:
- Small Family (Nuclear): Just you, your parents, and maybe a brother or sister. Like a cozy team living together!
- Big Family (Joint): A big group with Dadi, Dada, Chacha, Chachi, and lots of cousins! Everyone shares and cares.
Fun Activity: Draw a picture of your family! Show who lives in your house. Add colors and share it with your parents!
2. Who’s Who in My Family? (Your View!)
As a kid in India, you call your family special names! Here’s who they are and what they mean:
Mummy/Maa (Mother): Your mom, who gives the best hugs and makes yummy dal or roti!
Papa/Daddy (Father): Your dad, who plays cricket with you and tells funny jokes.
Dadi (Father’s Mother): Your grandma on your dad’s side, who tells stories and gives laddoos.
Nani (Mother’s Mother): Your grandma on your mom’s side, who loves to spoil you with treats.
Dada (Father’s Father): Your grandpa on your dad’s side, who teaches you games.
Nana (Mother’s Father): Your grandpa on your mom’s side, who shares wise advice.
Bhaiya (Brother): Your older brother, who fights but shares his toys.
Didi (Sister): Your older sister, who helps with homework and plays with you.
Chacha (Father’s Brother): Your uncle, who brings gifts during festivals.
Chachi (Father’s Brother’s Wife): Your aunt, who makes fun snacks for you.
Cousins (Chacha/Chachi’s Kids): Your playmates for Holi and Diwali fun!
Think About It: What’s your favorite name for a family member (like Dadi or Bhaiya)? Why do you love calling them that?
3. My Family Tree
A family tree shows how everyone in your family is connected! Here’s an example:
Dadi & Dada

Mummy & Papa

Me & Bhaiya/Didi
In a big family, you might add Chacha, Chachi, and cousins too!
Fun Activity: Draw your own family tree! Write names like “Mummy,” “Dadi,” or “Bhaiya” and add a star for yourself!
4. Being Kind to Family and Friends
Being kind makes everyone smile! Here’s how to show love and respect:
- Listen: Hear what Mummy or your friend says without talking over them.
- Be Nice: Share your toys or say “thank you” to Dadi.
- Be Honest: Tell the truth, like if you ate the last ladoo!
Think About It: When did someone make you happy by being kind? Tell your teacher or write it down!
5. What Does My Family Do?
Everyone in the family has a job to make home happy!
- Mummy/Papa: Cook food, keep you safe, and teach you new things.
- You: Help with small chores like tidying your toys.
- Dadi/Dada: Share stories and help with homework.
- Bhaiya/Didi: Play with you and share snacks.
Fun Activity: Make a “Family Helper” chart! Write one job each person does at home, like “Mummy cooks” or “I clean.”
6. Fun Festivals and Celebrations
In India, festivals are like big parties with family and friends!
- Diwali: Light diyas, eat sweets, and watch fireworks with cousins!
- Holi: Throw colors and dance with Bhaiya and Didi.
- Raksha Bandhan: Tie a rakhi on your brother’s wrist and get gifts!
- Community Fun: Join mohalla fairs or temple events with neighbors.

7. Helping at Home and Outside
Helping makes everyone happy!
- At Home: Help Mummy set the table or water plants with Dada.
