What is Division?
Division is a basic arithmetic operation that splits a number (the dividend) into equal parts based on another number (the divisor), resulting in the quotient. It is represented by the "÷" symbol or a slash (/). For example, 12 ÷ 3 = 4, where 4 is the quotient (12 split into 3 equal parts of 4).
Division is used in everyday life, such as dividing resources, calculating averages, or determining rates.
Types of Division
- Single-digit division: Dividing a number by a single-digit divisor (e.g., 18 ÷ 3).
- Two-digit by one-digit division: Dividing a two-digit number by a single-digit divisor, with or without remainders (e.g., 45 ÷ 5).
- Three-digit by one-digit division: Dividing a three-digit number by a single-digit divisor (e.g., 615 ÷ 5).
- Four-digit by one-digit division: Dividing a four-digit number by a single-digit divisor (e.g., 7035 ÷ 3).
- Division with remainders: When the dividend is not perfectly divisible by the divisor (e.g., 20 ÷ 3 = 6 remainder 2).
- Division without remainders: When the dividend is perfectly divisible by the divisor (e.g., 12 ÷ 4 = 3).
Examples of Division
1. Single-Digit Division
18 ÷ 3 = 6
Explanation: Divide 18 into 3 equal parts. 3 × 6 = 18, so the quotient is 6.
2. Two-Digit by One-Digit Division (Without Remainder)
45 ÷ 5 = 9
Explanation: Divide 45 by 5. 5 × 9 = 45, so the quotient is 9.
45 ÷ 5 = 9
3. Two-Digit by One-Digit Division (With Remainder)
47 ÷ 5 = 9 remainder 2
Explanation: 5 × 9 = 45, subtract from 47: 47 − 45 = 2. Quotient is 9, remainder is 2.

4. Three-Digit by One-Digit Division
615 ÷ 5 = 123
Explanation: Divide step-by-step: 6 ÷ 5 = 1 (write 1, 5 × 1 = 5, 6 − 5 = 1); bring down 1 (11 ÷ 5 = 2, 5 × 2 = 10, 11 − 10 = 1); bring down 5 (15 ÷ 5 = 3, 5 × 3 = 15, 15 − 15 = 0).

5. Four-Digit by One-Digit Division
7035 ÷ 3 = 2345
Explanation: Divide step-by-step: 7 ÷ 3 = 2 (write 2, 3 × 2 = 6, 7 − 6 = 1); bring down 0 (10 ÷ 3 = 3, 3 × 3 = 9, 10 − 9 = 1); bring down 3 (13 ÷ 3 = 4, 3 × 4 = 12, 13 − 12 = 1); bring down 5 (15 ÷ 3 = 5, 3 × 5 = 15, 15 − 15 = 0).
