📚 Understanding Place Value & Face Value

What is Place Value? 🏠
Place value tells us what each digit in a number means based on where it sits. Each position has a different value - like different rooms in a house!
Thousands
3
1000
1000
1000
3 × 1000 = 3000
Hundreds
4
4 × 100 = 400
Tens
7
7 × 10 = 70
Ones
2
2 × 1 = 2
The Number 3,472 = 3000 + 400 + 70 + 2
Each digit has a different value depending on its position!
• The 3 is worth 3,000 (three thousands)
• The 4 is worth 400 (four hundreds)
• The 7 is worth 70 (seven tens)
• The 2 is worth 2 (two ones)
Face Value vs Place Value 🎭
Face Value: The actual digit itself (what you see)
Place Value: The value based on position

In 3,472:
• Face value of 4 = 4 (just the digit)
• Place value of 4 = 400 (4 in hundreds place)

Face value is always the same, but place value changes with position!
Remember the Pattern! 📈
Each place is 10 times bigger than the place to its right:
Ones → Tens (×10) → Hundreds (×10) → Thousands (×10)
1 → 10 → 100 → 1,000
